Telling my Story

My Odyssey from Accounting to Urban Agriculture

Last week I had a truly special opportunity that I will cherish for the rest of my career. I was invited to come back to the University of Michigan and present my career journey to a class of undergraduate econ majors through the Econ@Work program.

The professor mentioned that he wanted to show his students a different path than the stock, “worked at a bank for a decade” one that he had so many times before. In cruising the linkedin web, he saw my profile and noted that my weird, winding and curious Odyssey from big 4 accounting to urban agriculture had to be an interesting story, and asked me to come in and present it to a group of undergraduate Econ students.

The timing was perfect, as I’ve been thinking about it a lot recently. As the 2010’s closed, I’d been spending a lot of time unpacking the last decade and mentally preparing for the new decade and the big things coming this year. As I am preparing for fatherhood in a few months, this was a perfect time to reflect on everything that led me here. The chance to narrate and memorialize my journey to this point feels like an appropriate way to close this chapter as I prepare to write the next one.

To be honest, it was just really cool telling my story, as no one has ever asked or heard it before!
